It's all my fault, thought Lynnette miserably. She stood in the icy rain, not caring that she was soaking wet and chilled to the bone. Streams of water ran down her face, mingling with the salty tears spilling from her emerald eyes.
I shouldn't have let him leave by himself, she told herself for the millionth time. But why didn't he put on a security rope? Her mind went back to earlier that day, when Ruzgar had arrived breathlessly at the palace, shouting that the prince had fallen.
“He just slipped and was gone, and there wasn't anything I could do,” she recalled him wailing regretfully. But there had been something about Ruzgar's demeanor that made her think it was an act. His sorrow had seemed almost...forced. Had he murdered the prince? It was possible. She needed more information.
Clutching the sword at her hip, Lynnette turned and made her way back to the palace. She hurried up the slick steps and nodded at the sentries, who recognized her as a royal guard from her green and silver uniform. Determinedly, she strode down the hall, her footsteps echoing and her pale face reflecting in the rain-streaked windows lining the long corridor.
Lynnette could hear someone crying as she went by the Sun and Moon chambers. Most likely, it was the queen, mourning the loss of her only son. She hurried on, passing the other chambers without notice.
There were five main chambers that the royalty belonged to. Each chamber's members had a specific job in Wingdom's government.
She stopped at the Wind Chamber, which was the department for the guards and the city's security. Ruzgar was head of the Wind Chamber, which Lynnette was not too happy about. He was a perfectionist, which meant that if you were anything less than perfect, he would make you suffer for it.
Lynnette was about to turn the doorknob when she heard Ruzgar's voice from within.
“...no one suspects, darling.” Suspicious, she pressed her ear close to the door.
“Are you sure?” That was the voice of Ruzgar's wife, Lady Ventus.
“Of course,” said Ruzgar. “I made certain we were alone before the prince...fell.”
Lady Ventus gave a little laugh. “Yes, it's so just so tragic, isn't it?”
Lynnette's heart skipped a beat. She leaned against the door to hear better, and it creaked.
“Did you hear that?” said Ruzgar.
Fearing that she would be discovered, Lynnette slowly backed away, then ran down the hall. She ran without stopping until she reached her quarters, a small but tidy room.
She barely had time to process all she had heard when she felt a buzz on her wrist. Afraid that it was Ruzgar contacting her, she hesitantly lifted her arm and said, “Who is it?”
To her shock, Cielo answered. “Lynnette? Is that you?”
“Y-yes it's me. But...what are you doing....alive? Where are you?”
